The Story of the 12 Tribes of Israel

Across the world, people are discovering Jewish roots, forgotten family stories, or simply a connection to Judaism they cannot explain.
To understand why, we have to go back to the beginning.

The Twelve Tribes came from the twelve sons of Yaakov, also called Israel.
Together, their descendants became the nation of Israel.
But after the time of King Shlomo, the kingdom divided. Most of the tribes belonged to the northern Kingdom of Israel, while the Kingdom of Judah remained in the south around Jerusalem.
That division changed Jewish history forever.

In the 8th century BCE, the Assyrian Empire conquered the northern Kingdom of Israel and displaced many of its people.
Over centuries of exile, migration and assimilation, the identity and location of many descendants became unclear.
They became known as the Ten Lost Tribes.
"Lost" doesn't necessarily mean they disappeared.
It means that after thousands of years, we no longer know with certainty where all their descendants are.

Judah was later conquered too, beginning another long history of exile, return and displacement.
Jewish communities eventually developed throughout the Middle East, North Africa, Europe, Asia and beyond.
Some maintained clear Jewish identities for generations.
Others became separated from the wider Jewish world.
And some family histories were changed, hidden or forgotten completely.
